The Team also has the remit for our Bromley Young Advisors (BYA), which involves 22 Young People from around Bromley, who have been trained in community work and represent the views of young people on the borough's 22 Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

You can contact the Young People's team by emailing info@bcef.org.uk to find out more on our work or to get involved.

Age Exchange Event 25th February 2012

On Saturday 25 February between 1-4pm at the Priory School, Orpington, the Bromley Community Engagement Forum recently held “Age Exchange”, an event bringing together the younger and older age groups to swap stories, share ideas, break down barriers, discuss/share career paths and just take the time to listen to each other. It was also an opportunity for the younger people to explain social networking sites and to show how easy it is to stay in touch with relatives and friends without the need to leave home. (Hayes School students also set up an on-line help facility for delegates to obtain computer assistance.)

Topics discussed which related to both age groups ranged from the unfairness of bad publicity, intimidation, and consideration such as giving up your seat on the bus.

The event also showcased young and mature talent, such as an 89 year old special guest discussing her tales of her time during World War II in the Royal Air Force driving bomber crews, and a 20-year old musician combining old Blues sounds with modern lyrics.

Cllr Tim Stevens, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, gave a keynote speech and said it was an excellent day.  Ian Smith, Chair of the Bromley Community Engagement Forum, welcomed all at the start of the day and concluded with a list of thanks and acknowledgements that recognised the valuable contributions by all those attending.

Bethany Russell from Veneratio said Age Exchange was a pioneering success, bringing older people into a social setting with younger people, to the enjoyment of both. Our thanks to everyone who contributed to the day, especially to Hayes School Year 11 students (see their report at the end) along with the music loving The Priory School students.

Specialist Schools Youth Conference October 2011

BCEF was proud to host a Youth conference aimed specifically for Specialist Schools on this Borough – the first of its kind in Bromley. Specialist Schools have always been invited to participate in our annual Youth Conferences but due to the students disabilities/requirements it was difficult for many to be able to attend/participate as fully as they would like and the Specialist Schools felt that it was always the same more able students who participate in borough wide events. Working closely with the Schools involved (Marjorie McClure, Riverside, Glebe) the students themselves identified the workshops and the day’s format.

Building up to this Conference  we held meetings with students from Marjorie McClure School to discuss their vulnerability whilst out in the Borough and the Glades Management/Security have offered to hold a ‘meet and greet’ time with students and carers to help them feel confident whilst using the Centre. Also looking at new signage for Customer Services Desk and Marjorie McClure School are working with Mencap to identify suitable signage for students to recognise if they need assistance. Students at MMC School have also asked for more interaction with police officers.

BCEF Youth Conference March 2011

The Churchill Theatre in Bromley was host to 130 young people from Bromley’s Schools on Wednesday 23 March 2011, for the third annual Bromley Community Engagement Forum (BCEF) Youth Conference.

On the agenda for the young people and their teachers at the theatre were three workshops focussing on Mutual Respect, Cyber Bullying and Drug Awareness, along with an opportunity for attendees to question the Boroughs top leaders from Policing, Fire and the Council on a variety of issues and gain an understanding about how decisions are made.

The subjects raised in the question and answer session ranged from the policing of transport hubs to dangerous wild animals in the borough and from forthcoming budget savings to the confiscation of alcohol in the Alcohol Exclusion Zones in the borough's town centres. Attendees were also given the opportunity to give their views on Stop and Account for an MPA survey.

Lulu Pearce, acting Chair of the BCEF said: “The Youth Conference is extremely important to the BCEF and its partners and the day was a real opportunity for my team and the young delegates to interact. The opportunity to understand the key issues which affect Bromley’s young residents is paramount and in turn helps for the right decisions to be made for the future”.

Bromley Police's Deputy Borough Commander Martin Huxley said: "The BCEF has a role in ensuring effective community engagement for the Safer Bromley Partnership. This event was another example of how well they do this. Most young people are enthusiastic, energetic and care about their future. The workshops were a fantastic opportunity to give us their perspective".

Biggin Hill Youth Day June 2010

BCEF participated in the annual Biggin Hill Youth Day, an event run by Air Displays International based at Biggin Hill Airport, who arranges the famous air show weekend. 27 schools were invited, 10 from LBB, and the day gave the young people the opportunity to have a preview of some of the flying displays and visit the exhibitions prior to the main event. We compiled a questionnaire to assess youths views on community safety and this information was related to the relevant organisations and displayed in the attached report.

It was a very successful day for us as we completed all of our 350 questionnaires!  A raffle to win an i-pod was used to encourage youths to fill out a questionnaire. You can read the consultation report by clicking here. The picture shows Carleen Proudfoot, a student from Priory School who was the lucky winner of our prize draw receiving her gift from Lt. William Holloway of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment.
